Il Turno in official competition at the 78th Venice Film Festival, the only Italian short at Orizzonti 2021
Anna and Lucia, two girls in their twenties, one Italian and one of Nigerian origin, alternate as carers for Mrs Maria, an elderly bedridden woman. Anna assists Maria during the day, while Lucia works at night: the shift change is the only time the two girls meet. In that short period of time, the differences between them explode daily, in a conflict to assert, one at the expense of the other, their position in the world.
The first collaboration with Chiara Marotta and Loris Giuseppe Nese, the duo from Salerno: Articolture arrives straight at the Lido. After appreciating their previous works, the producers worked hard to make their new short film, which immediately obtained the coveted contribution of the ex-MiBACT/SIAE call “Per Chi Crea” and then the support of the Film Commission of the Campania Region .
“Il Turno” is a mono-location short set in Salerno, the directors’ hometown, which starts from the relationship between three women – an elderly bedridden woman and her two young carers – to address themes such as the absence of prospects and the condition of subordination that the two girls have in common regardless of their origins, in a social context such as that of southern Italy. Articolture shared the vision of Nese and Marotta in terms of casting (only non-professional actresses) and the construction of the crew (small and close-knit, based on the skills of the two directors, one also DOP, the other also an editor) and it is spent to activate an impact process with local institutions through which to identify the foreign protagonist in the Salerno community of migrant women. Thanks to Sayonara Film, which supports Articolture in the promo-distribution of the film, “The shift” is the only Italian short in competition at the 78th Venice Film Festival, section Orizzonti, and has already been sold to RAI Cinema Channel.
