Cose naturali
A reflection on the relationship between pleasure and the transience of life.
An almost eighty-year-old widower (Roberto Herlitzka) obsessively studies the ancient Roman poet Lucretius. He lives with his recently divorced son and grandson. Despite his age, he continues to indulge his body and his desires. He starts dating a prostitute (Angela Baraldi) from the working-class neighbourhoods, with whom he ends up falling in love. The dangerous taking of stimulant pills (today’s version of Lucretius’ love potion?) starts an epicurean challenge between life and death, on a hospital bed. The voice of his thoughts leads the old man on a journey into the deepest part of himself, the summary of his own reflections: the lucid and conscious observation that, while bodies and all things will be cruelly consumed, the pursuit of pleasure will retain its undeniable attraction towards living beings (and their bodies). This is the nature of things.
